Book Review: The Ranger's Apprentice

The Ranger's Apprentice is an epic young adult series of twelve books by Australian author John Flanagan.
The main character of The Ruins of Gorlan is a young orphan named Will, who has no knowledge of his past or parents. His entire life has been spent in the land of Araluen, where he lives in the Ward with his fellow orphans. Until the day of the Choosing- that much-anticipated time when each of the teens will be chosen by a trade master to train as an apprentice.
The short, slim, rather unimpressive-looking Will dreads the Choosing, knowing that he is too small to be a knight, too scrawny for a soldier. He believes that he is doomed to a life of forever falling short- no pun intended- but then he is discovered by the most unlikely trade master possible- the mysterious ranger Halt, who sees potential in young Will.
The Ranger's Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan is an amazing book, one of many that Flanagan has written. It is a story of profound bravery and sacrifice, noble characters, and hilarious dialogue. This is a must-read for fans of Robin Hood and other stories of valor! It is very clean with little romance and limited violence.

  1. I love that series so much! Personally, I think that Warrior of the Son is better, but then I'm obsessed with them!!!! XD

  2. Exactly. I love Ranger's Apprentice. Who's your favorite character?

  3. Will, although I feel like that is a pretty typical answer! :)

    1. Ah, the dry sense of humor. Flanagan really showed a lot more of that side of Halt in the last several books. Have you read the Early Years yet?
